The nature of history

There are also many misconceptions about the nature of history. And it is a misconception that history can be written as you wish. Another misconception is that historians record their own men in history, giving them importance by selecting events and individuals according to their convenience. These misconceptions can be dispelled if the true nature of history is known. History is a social science, not a subject based on fiction based on stories or novels. As the scripture says, there is a separate technique of study, research and formulation, just as it is in history. You can't write a history that suits your imagination, and no one who writes it is recognized. There is a technique of tracing the events of the past, one has to accept the truth that emerges from it. No matter how unpleasant.

History paints a picture of society as a whole. But it looks pretty dull. When we look for our mention in history as a person in a society, as a group, as a caste, as a religious group, despair comes. Many in the society feel that they are not mentioned in history. It is deliberately avoided, because the historian belongs to a certain caste, group, religion. Today, each of us is looking for the reflection of our own, our own caste, our own family from the history of the past and as it is not found, we are misunderstanding the history.

The nature of history will be clearer if we first understand who history records. History is the past of millions of years, at least a few thousand years, and history cannot record the millions of people who have passed through this past. If we take note of every living thing that was born and lived for a few years and then died over time, history will become a mere calendar for millions of people. Ordinary beings like you and me are not mentioned in history. Whose record is in history? There are people in history whose work has had a far-reaching effect on society / nation. Basically we are studying the course of social life. History is made by tracing the footsteps of the past. Ordinary people like us are born and die. Only those whose footsteps are left on the society are recorded in history. In the same way, the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar, Queen Elizabeth of England, King XVI of France, or Emperor Ashoka, Akbar or Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj of India are recorded in history. The memory of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, Vardhaman Mahavira, Jesus Christ, Hazrat Muhammad, Kanad, Kapil, Tao is evoked by their philosophical contributions.

Eknath, Dnyaneshwar, Namdev, Tukaram, Goroba, Janabai, Ravidas, Chokhoba, Nabhadas, Sena, Narhari, Joga Parmanand, Savta, Ramdas are the names that make history, not because of their particular caste but because of their ideological contribution, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Dhondo Keshav Karve, Agarkar, Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil were recorded in history due to their important contributions. Some of the people we have today will be remembered for their selfless work. According to the saying 'Marave pari kirti rupe urave', those who have done deeds that will remain immortal in the form of fame, then those people will be remembered no matter who they are. They are recorded in history.

The implication is that the nature of history traces the past course of human life. The steps that will be remembered in this journey. Then all those who take such steps become the subject of the study of history. History makes a proper explanation of the known elements by interpreting them and conveys this explanation to the society. So among the political thinkers Plato, from Aristotle to Kautilya; Aryabhata among scientists, from Bhaskara to even Newton; Everyone from Sigmund Freud to Karl Marx is involved in history. To trace the course of human life is to trace all its movements, dealings, expressions. That is why painters like Leonardo-da-Vinci are the subject of history, as are poets like Kalidasa and Shakespeare.

History is a science that traces the past. Of course, it is not as good as chemistry or physics. To some extent it is also art. At the level of study it is science, at the level of expression it is art.
